How Do Wizards And Bards Learn New Spells In DnD 5e?
In DnD 5e, Wizards learn spells by levelling up or by finding tomes or items where they can learn a new spell. Bards, on the other hand, follow a table for the number of spells known. Also, both classes are limited by what spell slot they have.
The two classes learn spells differently.

For Wizards learning spells in DnD 5e:
As mentioned above, the Wizard will need to actually learn each spell and add it to their spellbook. There are two ways to do this:
- Level up
- Find scrolls/tomes or items you can learn spells from

Spending time on it means your character needs to apply some practice to get it right. The time required is 2 hours.
Spending money on it, means that you need to gather resources to learn the spell. There are different components to learning a spell, this means that as you practice it, you will need the said items to be able to cast it properly. This is reflected as 50 gp.
How Many Spells Do Wizards Know At Level 1 In DnD 5e?
This might beg the question of how many spells you actually start with, and the answer is 6.
At level 1, the Wizard can have 6 spells prepared from their spellbook. This may mean that within your spellbook, you have six spells that you already have spent time and resources to learn.

For Bards learning spells in DnD 5e:
In Dungeons and Dragons Fifth Edition, Bards can choose among the list of spells that they have, however, there is a limit depending on their level. Also, the spell they can learn depends on the spell slots that they have.
The Bard can simply choose any spell from their list of spells. As mentioned above, this is regulated by limiting the number of spells they know depending on their level. The table of how many spells they can learn/know at a certain level is located on page 53 of the Player’s Handbook.
Cantrips however are a different thing. Like a Wizard, they can now a certain amount per level. For Bards, they can learn 2 at level 1. This increases for each level gained depending on a table which can also be found on page 53 of the PHB.
For example: A bard at level 1 will only be able to use and prepare 4 level 1 spells.

This is because the Bard only has level 1 spell slots.
Should the bard progress to level 3, they can now know six spells and use level 2 spells as well. This means that they can have four level 1 spells and 2 level 2 spells, as any combination can work.
As the Bard’s level progresses, you will be able to choose which College the Bard gets. Should you choose the College of Lore Bard, you will be able to learn two spells from ANY class. This will also bump your usable/prepared spells by 2.
As an example, a bard can know 9 spells at level 6. Should they become a Lore Bard, they can bump it up to 11.
How Do Wizards and Bards Swap or Prepare Spells in DnD 5e?
In DnD 5e, Wizards can swap or prepare spells at the end of each long rest. Bards, on the other hand, can swap their known spells after they level up, it’s spell level limited to the level of spell slots they have.
For Wizards, they can swap out their prepared spells each day after a long rest. It will take some time for them to prepare them as noted in the Basic Rules, which will take about 1 minute per spell level.
This means that if you are changing a level 1 spell, it will look like this:

For Bards, they can only swap out their spells after leveling up. But remember, they can only learn spells whose level is equivalent to their spell slot level available.
So it will look like this:
Do note: This is not an optimal build, don’t copy it.
As you can see, you can start learning level two spells as soon as you have a level two spell slot. Also, you can swap out one spell per level. That means in addition to learning a NEW spell, you can change an old one, as well. Of course, this spell is also limited to the level of spell slot you have.

A spell scroll bears the words of a single spell, written in a mystical cipher. If the spell is on your class's spell list, you can use an action to read the scroll and cast its spell without having to provide any of the spell's components. Otherwise, the scroll is unintelligible.
If the spell is on your class's spell list but of a higher level than you can normally cast, you must make an ability check using your spellcasting ability to determine whether you cast it successfully. The DC equals 10 + the spell's level. On a failed check, the spell disappears from the scroll with no other effect.
Once the spell is cast, the words on the scroll fade, and the scroll itself crumbles to dust.
The level of the spell on the scroll determines the spell's saving throw DC and attack bonus, as well as the scroll's rarity, as shown in the Spell Scroll table.

A wizard spell on a spell scroll can be copied just as spells in spellbooks can be copied. When a spell is copied from a spell scroll, the copier must succeed on an Intelligence (Arcana) check with a DC equal to 10 + the spell's level. If the check succeeds, the spell is successfully copied. Whether the check succeeds or fails, the spell scroll is destroyed.
